The world of beer was a very different place in 1987, the year I started my "professional" brewing career. National brewing giants were homogenizing the beer scene as quickly as you could croak "Bud Light", Coors was finally a national phenomenon with the Silver Bullet, and Regional brewers were being snatched up by the "House of Heileman". It seemed unfathomable to us in the Northwest at the time, that vaunted and historic brewers like Olympia, Weinhards, and Rainier, as well as countless others would be snatched up, consolidated, sold off like mortgage backed securities, and eventually shuttered, only to become "marketing entities" like PBR.
